Maternal-Fetal Medicine Specialist,       St. Joseph’s Health, Paterson, NJ

Dr. Kerly Guerrero is a Maternal-Fetal Medicine specialist at St. Joseph’s Health in Paterson, NJ.
Originally from Ecuador, Dr. Guerrero and her family immigrated to the United States at the age of four.
In 2013, Dr. Guerrero earned her Bachelor of Science in Biology, graduating Magna Cum Laude with a
minor in Latin American and Latino(a) Studies. She received her medical degree from Rutgers Robert
Wood Johnson Medical School in 2017. Following this, she completed her residency in Obstetrics and
Gynecology at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School in Newark, NJ, in 2021. Dr. Guerrero then pursued a
Maternal-Fetal Medicine Fellowship at Montefiore Medical Center in The Bronx, NY, which she
completed in 2024.

 

Dr. Guerrero’s commitment to education and her community is evident throughout her career. While at
Seton Hall University, she was awarded several honors, including the Seton Hall Bishop Joseph A.
Francis Freedom Service Educational Award, Seton Hall University’s Outstanding Achievement Award,
and SHU’s Outstanding Student Leadership Award. She was inducted into the National Honor Society,
Epsilon Omega Psi (EOF) Honor Society, and The Golden Key Honor Society. Additionally, Dr.
Guerrero served as president of Chi Upsilon Sigma National Latin Sorority Inc. and was recognized as the
LUPE Fund Inc’s 2012 Zulima V. Farber Young Latina Leadership Scholar. Her volunteer work includes
tutoring ESL and GED students with La Casa De Don Pedro and mentoring high school students in
Piscataway, NJ.


Dr. Guerrero’s dedication to improving healthcare access is highlighted by her involvement in Access-
Med, a pipeline program designed to support underrepresented groups in medicine. At medical school,
she chaired the communications committee and worked as a student doctor at Promise Clinic, a student-
run clinic providing primary care services to the community. She played a key role in establishing a
medical Spanish course to help non-Spanish speaking students better communicate with patients and
contributed to the development of a phone system ensuring clinic patients had access to care on non-clinic
days.


Her research interests are community-oriented, including her contribution to the Physical Activity System
of Support (PASOS) program, a community-based intervention aimed at increasing physical activity
among Latinos with diabetes. She was also a CHCI United Health Foundation Scholar-Intern and
received the 2017 Rutgers RWJMS Community Service Award.


During her OB/GYN residency, Dr. Guerrero continued her community service by volunteering for the
annual See, Test & Treat Program, a free cancer screening and health education initiative. She also
organized her residency program’s community service event and conducted research focused on reducing
maternal morbidity and mortality among minority patients. Her contributions were recognized with the
NJMS OB/GYN Resident Day Research Award, and she was elected Administrative Chief Resident,
earning the NJMS OB/GYN Residency Roth-Pearl Esprit De Corps award.


From 2022 to 2024, Dr. Guerrero participated in the Empire Clinical Research Investigator Program
(ECRIP) fellowship, sponsored by the New York State Department of Health. Her research focused on
evaluating maternal and neonatal outcomes associated with adverse social determinants of health. During
this time, she was honored with the Leo M. Davidoff Medical Student Teaching Award and recognized as
one of the “Latinos 40 under 40 NYC” by Negocios magazine.


Outside of her professional role at St. Joseph’s Health in Paterson, NJ, Dr. Guerrero enjoys spending
quality time with her family, traveling, and reading.
